Earth Day Family Fun Day 2025: Creativity, Climate & Community in Action

For Earth Day 2025, I had the joy of project managing Earth Day Family Fun Day—a vibrant, community-led celebration that welcomed over 500 attendees to explore the theme “Our Power, Our Planet” through creativity, learning, and play.

Held in the heart of Rochdale at the Town Hall, the event brought together families, artists, educators, and local organisations to highlight the importance of environmental action and community resilience.

🎨 What We Created Together

Visitors enjoyed a wide range of family-friendly activities designed to spark curiosity and inspire change:

  • Biking & Scooting Zones – Encouraging active travel and sustainable transport.
  • Printmaking & Eco Crafting – Hands-on workshops for all ages.
  • Seed Bomb Making – Helping green our surroundings with take-home wildflower bombs.
  • Early Years Sensory Play & Salt Art – A cosy, creative space for babies and toddlers.

We showcased powerful artwork created by local school children around the theme “The Power of Water”, connecting beautifully to Rochdale’s rivers, reservoirs, and environmental heritage.

🌱 Learning Through Nature & Local History

  • Kokedama Workshop – Guests tried their hand at the Japanese art of moss ball planting.
  • Touchstones Mini Museum & Local Studies – Featuring historical objects and materials on water power, wind turbines, and Rochdale’s environmental legacy.

🔬 Science, Sustainability & Climate Action

  • Rochdale Science Initiative brought their Recycling Adventure:
    • 🐙 Jellyfish Creations from recycled bottles
    • 🔍 Microplastics under the microscope
    • 🚀 Rocket launches using film canisters
    • 🎶 Upcycled e-waste musical instruments

  • Resilient Roch – An interactive stall showcasing Rochdale Council’s climate resilience efforts, including flood prevention and energy-saving tips.
  • Spin the Wheel with Rochdale Borough Council – A fun way to learn about renewable energy and sustainability projects.

🎬 Theatre, Puppetry & Play

  • M6 Theatre’s “The Storm” – A powerful film set in 2050 exploring climate change through the eyes of a young girl and her family. The accompanying activities encouraged reflection and action around the Climate Emergency.
  • Bread and Butter Theatre Company’s Greenfinger Folk – Towering topiary garden fairies brought joy and laughter with their playful antics.
  • Walk the Plank’s Magpie, The Collector – A majestic mobile puppet on a custom bicycle, collecting shiny treasures and delighting visitors with its whimsical charm.
